This is supposedly the first book that Srinivasan has penned; if true he's clearly a Hamiltonesue polymath as it's the most engaging economic history of the United States I've read a real page turner I've also enjoyed John Steele Gordon's 'Empire of Wealth'; this is a similar uick sweep of history that provides excellent insights on why we shouldn't be surprised by the current economic and political dynamics today Srinivasan offers a new depth of understanding as he draws on his tech background to translate historic events into modern scaling up 'going public' terms His analysis of the economic value of the slave trade pointing out how both the North and Great Britain were so integrally dependent on the system was a revelation that I don't recall hearing in university courses His description of the pre Compromise of 1850 dynamics regarding runaway slaves clarifies that today's sanctuary cities are nothing new I think this book would be engaging for both economic experts and general readers such as myself Srinivasan is a gifted communicator; I hope this will be the first of dozens such efforts

Or his leadership of the steel empire that would make him one of the nation's richest men how the gunmaker Remington reinvented itself in the postwar years to sell typewriters how the inner workings of the Mafia mirrored the trend of consolidation and regulation intraditional business and how a s infrastructure bill triggered a series of events that produced one of America's most enduring brands KFC Reliving the heady early days of Silicon Valley we are reminded that the start up is an idea as old as America itself Entertaining eye opening and sweeping in its reach Americana is an exhilarating new work of narrative histo. The author makes several mistakes that makes what could have been an authoritative text on the subject fall into “pop history” The primary and most glaring issue is that it appears he came to his conclusion first goverment helped build the market in America then found the facts to support it He strains at times to try and fit the facts into his thesis and fails several times Most notably in the chapter regarding the oil industry where he couldn’t find any government assistance he pointed to the weak fact that the teamsters that transport the barrels of oil used roads that were built by the government As if the roads were not already there the companies would have sat on the oil until the government came around to build them for them News flash if the roads weren’t there they would have built them themselves

Original view easy to read well researched and appropriate for both buff and novice There have been several books written on the commerce & economic history of the US This book says commerce & economics weren't a part of the history but caused the history of the US to be as it was Srinivasan does it cleverly by breaking out different aspects of commerce as singular chapters and then shows how history is the cloth that was woven out of these aspects rather than the other way around The author tells this tale in a very readable fashionThis is not an academic treatise even as the bibliography shows that the research is extensive and well sourced Srinivasan was able to look at old research with new eyes The author brings to life many facts that have been forgotten overlooked or ignored over the years and places them in a well conceived and executed frameworkI believe one of the reasons for the well told story is because the author is an immigrant He looks at America and the American narrative with new eyes and without the baggage some of us carry that slants our interpretation of history All in all this is one of the best histories I’ve ever read
