I suppose it is almost inevitable that if as an author you hit top form in your first book and those that follow soon after sooner or later you are going to struggle to match the kind of success John Gierach has achieved over the past thirty four years since the publication of Trout Bum That book encapsulated everything that I had come to realise about the wonders and exuisite nature of fly fishing as it was then still understood The books that followed added further richness and with very few exceptions an unmatched texture to fishing writing in the modern eraHere was a man whose knowing clever subtlety and nuance combined with a certain sardonic humour vividly conveyed the wonders of the sport whilst at the same time laying bare the shortcomings of human nature in all its forms no matter where he encountered it and in so doing his books to many became deliciously unmissableThis glorious state of affairs lasted far longer and over books than any author or reader has a right to expect and sure enough in recent years the glory has begun to fade the repetition to increase and worst of all the inevitable search for varied material has changed the tone The variety of fish he pursues is now uite different and the emphasis on size of fish has reared its ugly head as to be so far removed from not only the content but the very ethos of Trout Bum and all that that means to me and to such a degree as to make this latest book and its author almost unrecognisable The writing is different too somewhat forced in places I thought and the tone seems inconsistent The sentiments expressed some of which are contradictory from chapter to chapter have finally made me wonder just which of the several horses he is attempting to ride in this book are his true selfI appreciate only too well the need for commercial product but that's my very point the reason I and so many others latched onto JG in the first place was because of his ability to express and confirm our delight at the thought of escaping the rat race and to fish in wild beautiful country fortrout on a dry fly not Muskies on half a dead animalSorry but for me the majority of this book is irrelevant the jig is up and the pun is intendedSuch a shame
